Custom-made display case for a remarkable object

A bespoke design for a reception area

After successfully collaborating on the fit-out of an institution’s reception area in Paris, the architecture firm Unza again called on our expertise for the next phase of the project.

This time, we were tasked with creating a bespoke wooden display case topped with a glass dome. It had to fit seamlessly into the overall design of the venue conceived by the architects. Specifically designed to house a model boat, the display cabinet serves as both a showcase and a functional piece.

Combining complementary expertise

What makes this project so special is the subtle combination of different techniques and exceptional materials.

A key feature of the design was the inclusion of a stand made from rough-hewn glass, a technique that creates indentations in thick glass. In this case, the ocean-blue glass and its shimmering glints enhance the wave effect under the model boat. This work requires an extremely high degree of precision, with a constant risk of breakage. The curved glass top embodies the architect’s vision, and was custom-made by one of our partners, a specialist in mirrorwork and glass art.

To achieve a seamless fit with the furniture piece, we had to hollow out the wood to obtain a perfectly even surface, demonstrating our expertise in assembling different materials.

A technical achievement that blends aesthetics with purpose

The end result is both graceful and practical, with the rear of the piece cleverly concealing storage space with an invisible, touchless opening system.

The rosewood veneer finish beautifully complements the white lacquered elements, resulting in an elegant, understated whole. The wooden strips covering the unit were given a metal-effect finish by our workshop.

To complete the piece, we also created a side table with a rosewood inlay on the top. The metal legs were crafted by one of our partners, and are complemented by rosewood inserts, forming a cohesive, harmonious ensemble.

This project was completed in late 2023 and is the result of almost four weeks of careful craftsmanship in the workshop, involving two skilled artisans, one specialised in production and the other in finishing. The meticulous assembly work, particularly evident in the curved connections and the way the rough-hewn glass is incorporated, testifies to the outstanding workmanship of Ateliers ARKAL.

This project perfectly illustrates one of our hallmarks: the art of combining multiple techniques and a range of expertise to fulfil our clients’ expectations. With our versatile skill set, we are able to create bespoke elements in a variety of materials from wood to glass and metal, bringing any custom project to life.
